Lenin Peak (7134m)

Chon-Ton or Peak Lenin (7134 m) is the highest peak of the Zaalai Ridge on the North border of the Pamir. It is covered by snow and glaciers on which some easy ways lead to the top. It is a very popular mountain region due to ease of access to the Base Camp and to the summit. This mountain, with its reputation as high-altitude walk-up, is on the short list of most-climbed 7000-m peaks in the world. The established Base Camp (3600m) at Achik-Tash is situated on a green meadow and offers most of the comforts of home.

There are wonderful views of the mountains from this place. In order to get here one has to fly by helicopter or to travel by truck from the city of Osh at the South-Eastern corner of the Fergana valley.

From Base Camp to Lukovaya Polyana, the last outpost before entering the slopes of Peak Lenin is hundred meters above Achik-Tash, then the path leads over the small, steep "Travellers" Pass, across a stream that becomes a river by midday, and over several miles of moraine to the edge of the glacier. Another mile of the glacier walking brings you to the glacier"s head at about the 4200 m level. This is a frequent place for Camp I. The mountain is shaped something like a great armchair; at this point you are situated in the middle back of the seat. The right "arm", as you face it - the Razdelnaya Ridge - is a long snow slog with few crevasses.

Many ascents, mostly by commercial expeditions on the standard route - from the north side via Razdelnaya Peak (grade 5A). The normal route on Peak Lenin has no so technical difficulties. But! It is long, takes several days for an acclimatized team and needs several camps installed in advance, additionally there exist dangers of crevasses on the glacier, of avalanches, of mountain sickness and invasion of bad weather at high altitude.
